What makes Holly Candle Shoppe candles different than other companies?
Our candles are not mass produced in some foreign factory somewhere... We hand-pour our own candles daily right in the great state of Michigan using time-honored techniques and only the most purest ingredients available. Our candle wax is manufactured meeting FDA standards from good, old-fashioned, American grown soybeans and contain NO pesticides, NO herbicides, NO petroleum, and NO paraffin. Put simply, the wax in our candles is 100% vegetable, made with pure soybean oil, which is a renewable, all natural product that is non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. Our jars are made by an American glass manufacturer and bought from an American Distributor. Our variety of packaging is all American-made and constructed of environmentally friendly paperboard that is biodegradable and recyclable. Our high quality fragrances and essential oils are hand selected and hand mixed in-house and we use only all-cotton wicks in all of our candles. All of this equates to a superior candle product that burns clean, lasts long and smells great until the very end.
How can I get the best performance from candles I buy from Holly Candle Shoppe?
To make sure you get the best performance from your new candle, you need to be aware of a few tips. First of which is the importance of the first burn, which establishes the candle's burning memory and determines how well your candle will perform for the remainder of its life. All candles will develop a "burning memory" during their first burn. It is recommended that you allow your new candle to burn one hour for each inch of its diameter. You should also perform regular wick maintenance prior to lighting your candle each time. Trimmed wicks will prevent your soy candles from smoking, producing soot and from a creating a high flame! The wicks should be trimmed to 1/4″ height before each burn. This can easily be achieved with a wick trimmer. When trimming a wick, be sure that no trimmings are left in the wax or else they may start on fire and cause trouble for you!
Are your candles soot free?
Truth is, anything that burns with fire causes some amount of soot and soy candles are no exception, no matter what other candle companies tell you. Soot production is a normal by-product of burning. With that said, however, soy candles do produce a very low amount of soot and we use only lead-free cotton wicks to create the cleanest candle burn we can provide for you. Trimming the wicks of your candles to a quarter inch prior to each burning will also keep them from producing much black soot and it will give your candles longer burn times.
Are your candles triple-scented like other candles I see from other companies?
A common marketing term used by other soy candle companies is "triple-scented". Our guess is that the company using that term feels that more must be better so therefore they advertise that they have three times as much fragrance than what other companies use. Truth is, candle wax, especially the natural soy wax that Holly Candle Shoppe uses, can only hold a particular percentage (by weight or by volume) of fragrance per ounce of wax. That means for every batch of wax we prepare, we can only add a very particular amount of fragrance because, again, the wax can only molecularly hold so much. If a manufacturer attempts to put more, or in this case, the advertised three times as much fragrance than the wax will hold, that fragrance will literally 'bleed' out of the candle after it sets, creating a huge mess and making for an unattractive candle product. The term "triple-scented" is just a marketing phrase used by some companies to make customers think their candles are higher scented than anybody else's candles. Now, if those other companies are using cheap fragrances - and it's not uncommon to find this in discount candles found in department stores or candles made by hobbyists - it may take three times as much fragrance than the wax can accommodate for that fragrance to be smelled, but then in that case, the cheap fragrance usually disappears after the first use of that candle. Holly Candle Shoppe hand-picks and hand-mixes only the finest quality, premium fragrances and essential oils available in North America. Sure, that means we're paying more for our fragrances, but the end result is a candle that has the correct amount of fragrance that the wax will hold and it will maintain that fragrance throughout the entire burn life of that candle. So, you can say that Holly Candle Shoppe candles are "appropriately scented".
I really like a particular fragrance, but I would like it in a different color. Will you pour it in a color of my choice?
One of the great benefits of pouring our own candles is the fact that we can offer custom candles very easily. Although we have defined consistent colors for each of our products, we will make them any color you like at no extra charge. This makes for a great option when looking for great party favors for your next baby or bridal shower. Need a particular fragrance that we don't carry? Tell us the one you are looking for and we'll acquire that fragrance and pour it for you. Have a hard to find signature fragrance from another company that you would like for us to match? Holly Candle Shoppe's resident candle artisan, Holly Jablonski, has a knack and the nose for 'unlocking' the secret scents buried within the notes of those signature fragrances and has successfully recreated many of them for customer orders. Again, we offer this service at no extra charge and once we have the recipe down, we keep it on file for you for when you need refills. Go HERE to learn more about our custom candle offerings.
What about taper candles?
We are proud to announce that we now hand-pour our own taper candles using 100% pure, domestically produced, golden beeswax, which is very clean, lightly filtered, and contains no fillers or additives. Like our soy wax, our beeswax is proudly Made in America and is hypo-allergenic. These beautifully poured, solid drip-less candles, have very long burn times and are made using all-cotton wicks for a truly clean and bright burning experience. Made using the same care and quality ingredients by Your Neighborhood Candle Place and available in 6", 10" and 12" lengths in-store at our Downtown Holly location. Custom colors available at no extra charge.
Can I burn soy candles if I am allergic to soy?
We actually get this question quite often. Most allergies to soy are related to food or skin products. There is usually very little risk of an allergic reaction to a soy candle, but to be sure you won't have a reaction, you really should ask your primary care physician before burning one of our natural soy candles. We know of a few customers who have soy allergies who tried using our candles and to date have not reported any symptoms of an allergic reaction.
What are reed diffusers?
Reed diffusers are a flameless fragrance product. They are a great alternative to adding fragrance to your home or office when a candle cannot be used. The way they work is the reed diffuser oil, which contains the fragrance, saturates the reeds and throws the scent into the air. Reed diffuser oils usually last months at a time before needing to be refilled.
What can you say about your reed diffuser oils?
We hand-mix our own reed diffuser oils using the same great fragrances we use in our candles and a very safe, high quality base that flows freely through the reed. Not all diffuser bases are equal. Many other companies use diffuser oils that are made with bases that have high levels of VOC's in them. VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) are compounds that are harmful and create indoor air quality problems. You can find out more air quality at the EPA's VOC page. The base we use is totally safe and not classified as a VOC.
Do you make your own room sprays?
Like our reed diffuser oils, we hand-mix our own room sprays using the same fragrances we use in our candles. Our sprays smell great and have no alcohol smell. As with all of our container products, our room spray can be refilled too!
Is your lip balm made of natural products?
Absolutely! Like our other high quality products, we worked hard to find only the finest ingredients to make this 100% all natural lip balm. The base of our lip balm is made of coconut oil, organic shea butter and organic cocoa butter.
